HOC ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF TONY S. DAVIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Two College-Bound HOC Resident Teens Chosen to Receive $5,000 Each

When Khalilah Sade Licorish heads off to Amherst College in Massachusetts this fall, she’ll have the added benefit of a $5,000 scholarship award to help with college costs. Khalilah, who graduated in June from the Holton Arms School, is one of two HOC resident teens to win the annual scholarship award.

Khalilah earned her scholarship by maintaining an A average her senior year while also serving as President of the Black Student Union and captain of the varsity basketball team.

Joining Khalilah as a $5,000 scholarship winner is John Hart, a June graduate of Gaithersburg High School. John will be attending George Washington University in the fall.  John’s dream is to become a medical doctor.

John has been very active at school.  He has been a student government officer, participated in many student clubs and honor societies, played sports and maintained a 3.65 GPA – mostly in Honors courses.

Both teens are winners of the Tony S. Davis Memorial Scholarship, a fund created in honor of the memory of Tony S. Davis, an HOC staff member who was dedicated to youth and community service. This is the third year HOC will be awarding the scholarships.

Candidates for the scholarship awards were required to maintain high grades, provide letters of recommendation, submit a 500-word essay describing their worthiness for the award, and meet additional requirements.

Those interested in learning more about this scholarship should contact Jerry Matthews at (240) 773-9327, or visit the HOC website, http://www.hocmc.org.  Applications are accepted for the scholarship each spring.
