For the third consecutive year, the Housing Opportunities Commission is teaming up with Federal Realty Investment Trust (NYSE:FRT) to help lower income students in Montgomery County start the coming school year fully equipped with new backpacks, pens, paper, binders and other items.

“Give a Child a Supply of Hope,” School Supply Drive launched on Friday, June 25, with the placement of collection boxes at stores in six different county shopping centers owned by Federal Realty Investment Trust and at 17 Montgomery County Department of Recreation Community Centers.  Donations of new school supplies will be accepted through August 20, 2004.

The six shopping centers participating in the drive are: Congressional Plaza, Wildwood Shopping Center, Federal Plaza, Mid-Pike Plaza, Gaithersburg Square and Quince Orchard Shopping Center. A list of the 17 recreation centers participating in the drive is attached.

"It gives us great pleasure to participate in a program where we can utilize our properties as a way to give back to the communities that our shopping centers serve," stated Kristine Warner, Director of Corporate Communications for Federal Realty.  "We look forward to working with HOC to attain our goal of collecting supplies for many children in Montgomery County".

“Federal Realty has demonstrated its generosity and commitment to our community once again,” said Scott Minton, HOC Executive Director.  “They are a valuable partner in helping us improve the lives and futures of the county’s lower income families.  Having the right tools to go back to school helps kids get off to a good start,” he added.

According to Gail Gunod-Green, HOC’s volunteer coordinator, backpacks are the items for which the greatest need exists.  To encourage people to donate backpacks,  a raffle will be held for those people donating backpacks. In order to enter the raffle, donors are asked to bring a new backpack to the Appalachian Spring store in Rockville Pike’s Congressional Plaza from June 25 to August 20.

The winner  of the raffle will receive $500 in gift certificates from various Congressional Plaza shops. The drawing will be held on August 20, 2004 at Congressional Plaza.

This year, HOC and Federal Realty hope to serve more than 1,000 kids living in HOC subsidized homes.
