Eighth Annual Housing Fair and Financial Fitness Day Planned; Sponsors and Exhibitors InvitedSue Tucker The Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs (DHCA) is looking for government agencies, community organizations and nonprofits interested in becoming sponsors or exhibitors for its eighth annual Housing Fair. The event will be held on Saturday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park located at Summit Hall Farm, 506 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg. With home prices declining, foreclosures increasing and the financial constraints on homeowners and renters tighter than ever, the County anticipates increased participation at the housing fair this year. Last year’s event attracted more than 20 sponsors, 90 exhibitors and over 1,000 participants. Sponsors receive recognition for their organization as well as publicity benefits, depending on the sponsorship level. Exhibitors in the Corporate, Government/Educational and 501(c) nonprofit categories, are encouraged to register before August 27 to receive a reduced rate. This year’s fair will focus on the rights and remedies available to homeowners and renters facing foreclosure as well as other housing issues. Everyone – from long-time residents to newcomers to the county – can learn how to buy a house, improve their credit and seek housing assistance. Information will also be available on managing money, preventing foreclosure and increasing earning power, as well as home safety, utility assistance, and energy savings. Interpretation services will be available for non-English speaking attendees. Participants will be able to work with a credit counselor to obtain and analyze a free copy of their credit report. Booths will be set up with tables and chairs for exhibitors. Attendees can receive one-on-one assistance from vendors. Discounted food and free entertainment for adults and children will be provided. Hourly raffles will give fairgoers an opportunity to receive $500 toward their rent or mortgage. “This fair is a wonderful opportunity for businesses and organizations to reach people who are in the market for housing in Montgomery County,” said Myriam Torrico, administrator of Hispanic Affairs at DHCA. “We are expecting a large turnout this year because we will be providing information and support to renters, people considering home ownership and those in danger of losing their homes.” Business, government agencies and community organizations interested in being a sponsor or an exhibitor should contact Myriam Torrico at 240-777-3627, or email myriam.torrico@montgomerycountymd.gov. The fair is organized by the Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs in partnership with the Housing Fair Planning Committee, whose members include: the cities of Gaithersburg, Rockville and Takoma Park; The Dwelling Place; HomeFree USA; Housing and Community Initiatives, Inc.; the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County; LEDC ; the Mid-County, Silver Spring and Up-County Regional Services Centers; and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. |
