At HOC, we invest in your future — through our creative solutions, commitment to improving our communities and by collaborating with students like you. Your fresh ideas and unique perspectives help us continually innovate.
The missions you serve during an HOC internship will give you the chance to apply your ideas and make a difference in the real world. From the variety of projects to the abundance of learning and development opportunities, our internships prepare students for a dynamic career in housing, mortgage financing, property management and other exciting fields. HOC interns don’t sit on the sidelines; they gain real-world experience tackling challenges and driving meaningful outcomes. We host various externship opportunities throughout the year.
HOC hosts Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) student interns referred by accredited social work programs with whom HOC has established formal agreements. HOC’s Service Coordination Manager serves as the school liaison, interviews potential intern candidates, coordinates with Human Resources on their placement with the agency, negotiates their work schedule, and identifies a suitable placement within HOC.
Social Work interns are assigned to an HOC field instructor who must agree to accept this responsibility and who are licensed social workers that qualify to serve as field instructors by each intern’s respective program. Staff members who are not licensed social workers can function as task supervisors. However, field instructors must oversee the intern’s activities, provide weekly individual supervision and complete required school documentation. Intern’s placement with HOC is typically for a full academic year. During that time, interns are assigned Resident Counseling responsibilities, receive weekly supervision from their field instructor, and receive monthly group supervision organized by the Service Coordination Manager. Prior to getting started, interns must meet Human Resources employment requirements (i.e., pass a criminal background check and complete the OMS Medical Screening). Upon arrival, they receive an agency orientation. They also receive customized training for their assigned tasks. Interns must serve at least three clients, conduct a “macro” project, and develop and implement a group project during the academic year. SW interns allow Resident Services to provide and reach maximum impact.
Each year HOC hosts several BSW and MSW student interns, who provide support to seniors, youth, families and individuals with disabilities. They usually work with the Resident Services Division, the Housing Services Unit and HOC Academy in addition to being assigned to a wide variety of HOC properties.
