The role of the Housing Stabilization Specialist is pivotal in aiding individuals and families to uphold stable housing conditions. Working closely with clients experiencing housing instability, you will offer support, resources, and guidance to assist them in securing and sustaining suitable housing arrangements. This position demands a compassionate and empathetic individual with outstanding communication and problem-solving abilities. Key responsibilities include advocating for and aiding clients in navigating various housing-related systems and services, such as public housing programs, rental assistance programs, and community resources. Additionally, conducting assessments of clients’ housing needs and identifying factors contributing to housing instability are integral aspects of the role.
Essentials Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide recommendations to the Department of Health and Human Services regarding payments utilizing State and County funds, ensuring thorough documentation and evidence of necessity.
Foster positive relationships with multiple utility companies to prevent disconnections and with landlords to prevent evictions. This includes preparing and submitting monthly narrative and statistical reports promptly and accurately.
Attend team meetings to stay abreast of new and changing policies and procedures.
Maintain relationships with non-profit agencies, faith-based organizations, and other resources within and external to HOC in an effort to assist clients in crisis.
Offer financial counseling and assistance to clients, including budgeting support, rental arrears assistance, and referrals to financial assistance programs.
Coordinate with landlords, property managers, and housing agencies to negotiate lease agreements, resolve housing issues, and advocate for clients’ housing rights.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, progress notes, and documentation of services provided.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including case managers, social workers, and healthcare providers, to ensure comprehensive support for clients’ housing needs.
Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to stay informed about housing policies, resources, and best practices.
Contribute to program evaluation and quality improvement efforts to enhance the effectiveness of housing stabilization services.
Knowledge and Skills Needed:
Previous experience in housing assistance, case management, or social services preferred and conducting assessments.
Knowledge of housing laws, regulations, and resources relevant to low-income and vulnerable populations.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish trusting relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and database management systems.
Knowledgeable working with community partners
At least two years of experience working with a culturally diverse, low-income population is required.
Ability to uphold strict confidentiality standards regarding client information is essential.
Demonstrated proficiency in maintaining high-quality customer service standards and a positive attitude is mandatory.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling or related field. Masters preferred.
